History

This style varied widely, but was originally based on farm houses that were found in the French countryside. Initially popular in the U.S. in the 1900s, this style has seen an increase in popularity again lately.

  • hip roof with some gable
  • 8/12 to 12/12 roof slope
  • most of the time brick or stucco
  • about a 1″ roof overhang
  • 1 ½ or 2 stories
  • curved top windows (sometimes called eyebrow windows)
  • small garage doors
  • hip dormers
  • some stone used
  • French door – arch top with oval window or plank with round top
  • occasionally quoins were used
  • dental blocks sometimes
  • chimney pots
